When you buy a diamond painting kit, it always comes with the basic green tray, a pink pen, and a little square of wax. While those are great to get started, upgrading your tools can completely transform your crafting experience!
After completing dozens of paintings, these are the exact favorite tools I use every single evening in my own home setup.
1. Ergonomic Acrylic Pens
The skinny pink pens that come in standard kits can make your fingers cramp up after an hour of crafting. I switched to a thicker, hand-turned acrylic pen. It feels just like a luxury ink pen, fits comfortably in your hand, and lets you paint for hours without any hand fatigue.
2. Large Trays with Alignment Gates
Those tiny green trays spill easily and don’t hold many diamonds. My absolute favorites are the larger, 3D-printed craft trays with a built-in spout and a sliding “gate.” They give you plenty of room to shake your diamonds into straight rows, and the spout makes pouring them back into containers a breeze.
3. Multi-Placer Tips
If you are working on a large area of a single color (like a big blue sky or a black background), placing one drill at a time takes forever. I love using multi-placer tips that pop onto the end of my pen. I use a 4-drill or a 7-drill placer to pick up a whole line of diamonds and snap them down all at once!
4. A Sleek LED Light Pad
This is a total game-changer. An ultra-thin LED light pad sits flat on your table right under your canvas. When you turn it on, the light shines up through the canvas, making every single symbol crystal clear. No more squinting or straining under living room lamps!
5. Storage Organizers (The Tic-Tac Style)
I moved away from tiny plastic baggies and started using a clear storage case filled with small, individual plastic bottles (often called Tic-Tac boxes). They sit beautifully in rows, pop open easily with one thumb, and make organizing your DMC color codes incredibly satisfying.
