Beginner’s Guide to Diamond Painting

Beginner’s Guide to Diamond Painting

Hi it’s Daphne, I would like to start today by describing how a beginner can start diamond painting.  Diamond painting is a relaxing craft that combines paint-by-number and cross-stitch. Instead of paint, you place tiny sparkling resin or dots “diamonds” to a sticky canvas to create a beautify picture.  It is easy to learn, calming to do and perfect for beginners.

What Comes in a Diamond Painting Kit?

Most kits include:

  • Printed adhesive canvas
    • Colored resin diamonds (called drills)
    • Diamond pen
    • Wax pad
    • Tray for diamonds
    • Color chart/ symbol guide
    • Instruction sheet

Step 1. Set Up Your Workspace

Chose a comfortable chair. Have good lighting and  a flat table or desk.  It is helpful to have extra:

  • Small container for diamonds   I use plastic baggies to organize the colors
    • Magnifying lamp
    • Craft mat
    • Storage boxes

A quiet, cozy setup makes the experience more relaxing.

Step 2: Understand the Canvas

The canvas has:

Symbols *

Letters

Numbers  DMC 310 = black diamonds

Each symbol, letter or number matches a diamond color.    Example   “A” = pink drills     “7” + Blue drills.

The chart is usually printed on the side of the canvas.

Step 3: Peel Back a Section

Do not remove the entire section of plastic cover at once.   Instead peel back only a small area,  Work section by section.   This keep the canvas clean and sticky.

Step 4: Pour Diamond into the Tray

Shake the tray gently so the diamond flip face-up.  When the diamonds flip right side up this makes them easier to pick up with the pen.

Step 5: Load or Prepare the Pen with Wax

Press the pen tip into the wax.  The wax helps the pen pick up diamonds. You only need a tiny amount of wax on the pen tip.

Step 6: Pick up and Place the Diamonds

Use the pen to:

  1. Pick up a diamond
  2. Match the symbol
  3. Press it onto the canvas

Repeat one diamond at a time.

This repetitive process is what many people find relaxing and stress relieving. Take your time. Straight rows.

Round vs. Square Diamond

Round drills are easier for beginners

Square drills are more detailed but require precision.

7. Finish and Seal (optional)

Enjoy and wait for the praises when someone see your completed are work hanging in your home.

Mistakes that beginners do not want to make

  1. Remove all plastic cover on the canvas at one time.
  2. Mixing the drill or diamond dots
  3. Working in dim light
  4. Throwing away extra drills
  5. Rushing to complete the canvas.

So try your own diamond painting.  You will find that it relieves stress.  It can be a quite evening hobby.  The painting can add to your home décor; it is easy to learn at any age.
